Google is one of the most consistent big-tech backers of African startups, through its Google for Startups Accelerator programmes. Both of the 2026 programmes covered here were equity-free, so Google took no stake in the companies.
The Africa-wide accelerator
The Africa programme reached its 10th cohort in 2026. It's a 12-week hybrid programme for startups from seed to Series A that are building with AI, machine learning or related technology. Startups get mentoring, technical support from Google engineers and help with growth, without giving up equity. Applications for the 2026 cohort closed in March.
The South Africa accelerator
Google also runs a programme just for South African startups. According to Google, the 2026 edition was equity-free and offered selected startups up to R1 million in non-dilutive funding. Applications ran from 21 July to 28 August 2026, and the programme runs from September to December 2026.
Who gets in
These programmes look for startups that already have a product and early traction, and a clear use of AI. They are not for ideas at the napkin stage.
